Update: Local Sheriff’s Deputy Helps Save Baby Calf

*this story has been updated with correct information*
A local sheriff’s deputy helped save the life of a calf born on one of the coldest nights of this winter.
Lyon County Sheriff Brent White says that Deputy Joe Witherspoon was answering a call about horses being out near Highway 93 North in Lyon County just before one Thursday morning. Instead of horses Deputy Witherspoon found a baby calf in a ditch.
Concerned for the calf’s life, as temperatures had dropped near single digits, he wrapped the calf up in a coat and called for backup. Lyon County Deputy and Caldwell County resident, Seth P’Pool, then went door to door searching for the owner. Deputy P’Pool was able to make contact with the owner, Roy Guess, who owns Guess Farms, where the calf was found.
Levi Holsapple, who operates Sunnyside Farms, a farm that works side by side with Guess Farms, then came and picked up the calf. Holsapple took the calf to Sunnyside and put in a calf warmer to help it survive the night.
Holsapple says the newborn calf had rolled under a fence into the ditch and the mother was unable to get to it. He adds that the calf is now recovering well and is now standing and taking to a bottle.
Those at Guess Farms and Sunnyside say they are extremely grateful to the sheriff’s department for their help.
The calf is expected to make a full recovery.
