Freezing Rain Causes Slick Road Conditions Saturday


A winter weather advisory was upgraded to a winter storm warning Friday night for western Kentucky as a mixture of freezing rain and sleet moved across the area through mid-morning. The winter storm warning issued for the area expired at 3:00 Saturday morning.
Freezing rain in Caldwell County left a coating of ice on power lines, trees, and roads. Caldwell County Dispatch says main roads were in pretty good shape but had some spotty slick spots Saturday morning and secondary roads were slick and hazardous.
The freezing rain caused some power outages in Trigg County overnight. Pennyrile Electric reported over 1,100 customers were without power at the peak of the outage. Electric crews had most of the power restored by mid-morning Saturday, except for a few scattered outages in the county.
Trigg County Dispatch tells us bridges and overpasses are icy and there are some slick spots on main roads throughout the county. Secondary roads had a coating of ice and were slippery. As of 5:30 Saturday morning, Trigg Dispatch had a report of a non-injury wreck on Interstate 24 and had received reports of several trees down across the county.
Hopkinsville-Christian County ECC says they have had no reports of wrecks Saturday morning due to road conditions. They say roads in Hopkinsville and in the county were slick Saturday morning, but conditions have improved.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says the icy conditions also caused some downed power lines in Marshall County near Kentucky Dam Village State Park as well as downed power lines on KY 453/Dover Road in Livingston County.
