Officials Kick Off Severe Storm Awareness Week

Officials from the National Weather Service (NWS) and area emergency managers gathered Thursday afternoon at the Pennyrile Area Development District office to kick off Severe Storm Awareness Week. March 1 through March 7 marks the week that officials inform the public on various ways to protect themselves during severe weather events.

Paducah NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin says it is really important to know what to do during a severe weather event.

He adds a Weather-Ready Nation starts at the local level.

Kentucky Emergency Management Area 2 Manager Patrick Hardesty says grass root organizations are crucial to informing the public on those safety tips. He adds there was a young boy who learned tips in school and then saved his family from serious injury during the tornado that struck Hopkinsville last February.

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says this year they will be reminding the public that any severe storm can produce a tornado.

According to Shanklin, they will host an informative Facebook Live session on their page Tuesday evening at 6:00 that will be held at the Crofton Community Tornado Shelter. In addition, the NWS team will spend Wednesday morning testing out the regional tornado warning system to make sure it is working properly.
