Protect Your Pets From Fleas and Ticks This Summer with Monthly Preventatives

Pet parents are being reminded that the best way to deal with creepy crawlies this summer is by getting your pet on a monthly preventative.
Dr. Kathryn Williams, small animal veterinarian at Luna Veterinarian Services, says that the best way to keep your pets safe from heartworms, fleas, ticks, and mosquitos is to prevent them.

She adds that while the volume of ticks this summer is expected to be high the worst thing about ticks are the diseases they carry.

Williams notes that most tick borne diseases take about ten hours to fully transfer.

She expresses that the best preventative for most pets are oral medications.

Williams does state that flea and tick collars can work but they must be prescription and must be placed properly on the animal for them to be effective.

She also cautions pet owners to contact the vet’s office before using a home remedy to get rid of fleas or ticks.
