Lyon County Special Education Receives $5,000 from BB&T Lighthouse Project Spirit Award

The special education department at a local school has been gifted additional funds from the BB&T Lighthouse Project Spirit Award for their recently completed Chill Spa Sensory Room.
At a ribbon cutting at the Lyon County Elementary School on Wednesday associates from BB&T in Eddyville presented Special Education Director Tina Peery with a $5,000 check to be used to provide even more for students living with special needs. Peery expressed that the sensory room will open up even more educational opportunities and sincerely thanked those involved in helping her dream become a reality.

Branch Banker Teresa Adcock explained that the sensory room was made possible through BB&T’s Lighthouse Project, a community service effort that allows associates to partner with local nonprofits to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
She added that associates from BB&T teamed up with members of Lyon County Special Education to help create a safe and soothing class room for special needs students, volunteering their time to help paint the room, put up padding on the walls, stage the room, and purchase much needed sensory items.
Adcock noted that at the close of each year’s campaign, six exceptional projects are identified as Spirit Award recipients for going above and beyond to meet the needs of the community and receive an additional $5,000. The Chill Spa Sensory Room was one of three selected by BB&T’s Executive Management team to receive the award and additional funding.
Since the inception of the BB&T Lighthouse Project in 2009, BB&T associates have completed more than 12,000 community service projects, donated more than 700,000 hours in volunteer service, and touched the lives of more than 18 million people.
