Caldwell County FFA Livestock Judging Team Brings Home State Reserve Champion Award

The Caldwell County FFA Livestock Judging team brought home the title of State Reserve Champion at the 116th Kentucky State Fair in Louisville August 14th and 15th. The first time in Caldwell County FFA history.
FFA Advisor and Educator at Caldwell County High School, Magen Woods, says Noah Peake, Katie Trimble, Shelby Lane, and Emily Kirk, placed 2nd overall after judging several different livestock classes, including Angus heifers, crossbred steers, market hogs, market lambs, goats and more.
She adds that fourteen other members also represented Caldwell County extremely well in state competition, proving their skills in various events ranging from seed identification to tobacco exhibits.

Meats Judging: Cole Smiley, Kaylee Brown, Brian Gill, James Jones

The Meat Judging team placed 5th this year after identifying retail cuts of meat from beef, pork, and lamb and determining USDA Quality and Yield grades on carcasses based on information provided. Team members included Brian Gill, James “Bubba” Jones, Cole Smiley and Kaylee Brown.
Floriculture Team: Top L: Nicole Cravens, Shelby Lane; Bottom L: Kyla McGowan, Kylie York

The Floriculture Team, which consisted of Kylie York, Kyla McGowan, Nicole Cravens and Kathryn Eldridge, ranked 9th in the state among 30 plus teams following contests consisting of flower identification, floral design, and written tests on horticulture knowledge.
Dairy Judging: Austin Richey, Destiny Mitchell, Maggie Ginn, Dylan Adams

The Dairy Cattle Judging team, which included Dylan Adams, Maggie Ginn, Destiny Mitchell and Austin Richey, finished strong among over 50 teams, placing 9th.
Agronomy Team: Noah Helphenstine and Bella McConnell

In a new contest for Caldwell County, Noah Helphenstine and Bella McConnell placed 13th in the Agronomy Judging competition, where competitors had to evaluate agronomic scenarios and develop a crop management plan that included crop selection, production, problem-solving, and marketing.
Woods notes that in addition to the team events FFA members entered numerous crops in various contests. Colton George received 1st place in Premium White Corn for 2018, while Kylie York, Dylan Harper, Colyn Caraway, and Nicole Cravens were awarded blue ribbons for their yellow corn entries. In the Wheat Division Kylie York took 5th place, white Ethan Cotton and Colton George placed 12th and 13th respectfully.
Kylie York continued to do well, receiving 4th place overall in the Soybean Division, with Colton George receiving 2nd place in Dark Fired by stick and 9th place in Dark Air-Cured by stick in the Tobacco Division.
Rounding out the honors at the Kentucky State Fair, Caldwell County won 2nd overall Best Chapter Wheat Exhibit, 5th Best Chapter Soybean Exhibit, and 4th Best Chapter Corn Exhibit.
