Princeton Rotary Club Presents Dictionaries to 5th Grade Students

Members of the Princeton Rotary Club presented dictionaries to fifth grade students at Caldwell County Elementary School as part of September’s Rotary International Basic Education and Literacy Month.
Club Executive Secretary Melissa Earnest says that members were able to pass out the dictionaries on Wednesday thanks to the Dictionary Project, which was established to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. Members were joined by School Resource Officers Bradley French and Nathan Herron, who also distributed dictionaries.

She adds that the Club chose to distribute the dictionaries to fifth graders after consulting with CCES Principal Malissa Thomas, and several teachers, who noted the curriculum for that grade level includes on-demand writing.

Earnest notes that in conjunction with The Dictionary Project, the Club has continued their partnership with The Free Reading Program for students in kindergarten through 6th grade, whose primary objective is to improve literacy through fundamental skills reinforcement activities. It includes 266 learning units and over 3,600 interactive learning activities, designed to engage young learners and instill confidence through a quiz and success-based teaching approach.

Earnest states that the program is free and all a student needs to register is a parent or guardian with an email address and Internet access on a computer or tablet. This is for all students – public school, private school, or home school. Parents or guardians can sign their child up by visiting the Princeton Rotary Club’s personalized page here, clicking “Create Free Account,” submitting an email and creating a password. Once the email address is confirmed, all the children in the family will have access to the learning units and activities.
