Local Firefighters Learn from 2014 Tragedy at Campbellsville University

A tragedy that happened on a college campus in Kentucky is now being used to teach firefighters and emergency personnel across the state how to be safe around electricity.
Brian Dickie, with the Kentucky League of Cities, presented a training exercise to Princeton and Fredonia firefighters Monday night concerning an accident on the Campbellsville University campus in August 2014 that caused the death of one firefighter and serious injuries to another.

Dickie, who investigated the incident while working for Kentucky Utilities, was approached by another fire department who had the hope of learning from the tragedy.

He noted that the presentation gives firefighters practical application when dealing with emergencies or events that may involve electricity.

Dickie expresses that members of the public can also learn from the accident and gives several tips on staying safe should an electrical emergency happen, such as a vehicle accident involving a downed power-line.

Campbellsville Fire and Rescue Captain, 41-year-old Tony Grider, died about a month following the accident involving the overhead power-line. The other firefighter in the basket with Grider, Simon A. Quinn, suffered severe injuries but was released from the hospital after an extended stay. Two other firefighters on the ground also suffered minor injuries during the incident.
