Hemp Farming and Processing Applications Open November 15

Kentucky farmers and agribusiness leaders interested in growing or processing hemp can apply for a hemp license from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture’s hemp program for 2020 beginning next month.

Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles says the KDA is constantly looking for ways to improve their hemp program and are making significant changes to the application process for the 2020 growing season to make it work better for Kentucky’s growers and processors. He adds that the KDA will accept grower applications from November 15th through March 15th with processor/handler applications being received beginning November 15th.

Commissioner Quarles notes that the KDA will host an online application which will include a mapping function.

He expresses that those interested in learning more about Kentucky’s hemp program can attend a Kentucky Hemp Summit on December 4th at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

The 2018 Farm Bill removed industrial hemp from the federal Controlled Substances Act, gave hemp growers increased access to USDA programs, and outlined the minimum requirements a state regulatory framework must contain to earn approval by the USDA. The federal Risk Management Agency announced in August that certain hemp growers may obtain insurance coverage under the Whole-Farm Revenue Protection Program in 2020.
