The Tiger Wrestling Club recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the Middle School State Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Pikeville.
Six Tiger wrestlers competed in the event, with Timothy Nichols finishing as state runner-up in the 105-pound class and Cole Sherill claiming state runner-up honors at 190.
Nichols won his first four matches at 105 before being decisioned by Leland Reeves of Taylor County 9-2 in the championship match. Nichols’ trip through the championship bracket included a “sudden victory” win in the second round and an 8-6 decision in the semifinals.
At 190, Sherill won his first four matches before being pinned in 2:36 by Uriah Virzi of Paducah in the championship match. Sherill’s run to the finals in his weight class included a 1-0 decision over Caleb Duke of Ryle in the semifinal round.
Four other Tigers wrestled at state but did not place. Logan Brown went 3-2 at 80 pounds. Donovan Rogers was 0-2 at 75, Cale Goodwin was 0-2 at 98 and Preston Rogers was 0-2 at 240.
The Tiger Wrestling Club finished 15th in the team standings at the Middle School State Wrestling Tournament. Johnson County won the team title. Union County was second and Paducah third.
