Homicide Charge Diverted In Pickett Plea Agreement

A Hopkinsville man charged in an alcohol-related traffic death that claimed the life of a Trigg County woman almost two years ago entered a guilty plea to DUI in Christian County Circuit Court Wednesday.
Brandon Pickett was originally charged with reckless homicide and DUI in the death of 49-year old Trina McAllister Akin after she fell out of his Jeep without doors on Striped Bridge Road on August 28, 2018. Deputies reported Akin was not wearing a seatbelt when she fell out of the Jeep and died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. The coroner’s office said an autopsy showed Akin died of a head injury.
According to court records, Pickett received a sentence of 30 days for the DUI charge, which he was credited for time served and will serve a year of unsupervised probation. As part of the plea agreement, the reckless homicide charge was diverted for three-years. The plea deal also includes a $375 fee for the DUI charge, a $500 fine, and $200 for court costs.
