To celebrate Rotary International’s Basic Education and Literacy Month the Princeton Rotary Club donated dictionaries to fifth grade students at Caldwell County Elementary School Wednesday.
Club Executive Secretary Melissa Earnest says each fifth grade student received a dictionary/thesaurus thanks to The Dictionary Project, which was established as a non-profit in 1995 by a couple from South Carolina who had the goal to assist students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. She adds local fifth graders were chosen after consulting with CCES Principal Malissa Thomas and several teachers who noted the curriculum for that grade level includes on-demand writing. Princeton Rotarians Gale Cherry, Melissa Earnest, and J.D. Wilson were joined by Princeton Police Department project partners, Nathan Herron and Brock Thomas, who are the School Resource Officers, for the dictionary distribution.
Earnest states in conjunction with the Dictionary Project the Princeton Rotary Club has also continued their partnership with the Free Reading Program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. She explains the primary objective of this program is to improve literacy through fundamental skills reinforcement activities, which includes 266 learning units and over 3,600 interactive learning activities, designed to engage young learners and instill confidence through a quiz and success-based teaching approach.
Earnest notes the program is free and all a student needs to register is a parent or guardian with an email address and internet access on a computer or tablet. To register for the program, which is open to all students whether they be in public, private, or home school, you can follow the link provided here. Once there you can create a free account, submit your email, and create a password. After email confirmation all children in the household will have access to the learning units and activities.
Visitors are always welcome to attend Princeton Rotary meetings, which are held every Tuesday at noon at Majestic House. Those who attend are being asked to wear masks when entering and exiting the restaurant and to observe social and physical distancing while inside.
