Kentucky Shatters Single Day COVID Case Number

Kentucky has shattered its single-day record for COVID-19 cases with Wednesday’s report of 5,742 new cases marking the first time its topped 5,000.
21-percent of the new cases reported came from Jefferson and Fayette counties — the same two counties that make up 23-percent of the state’s population.
The state also set a new record positivity rate record at 11.7-percent. However, daily testing is lagging behind last month through the first six days of January. Kentucky’s daily testing average of 16,795 this month is nearly 25-percent less than December’s average of 20,919 tests administered daily.
The state reported 1,778 people hospitalized with the virus, which is the second-most since the pandemic began. The state also reported 34 deaths linked to the virus marking the 38th day of double-digit deaths in the last 40 days.
