Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Remembered In Princeton Monday


‘We Are One’ was the theme of the 6th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Program which aired online at noon Monday on WPKY due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Hopkinsville Community College President Dr. Alissa Young was the program’s speaker. She talked about the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and how he lived a life of service and gave his life so that others could have a better life.
Dr. Young spoke about the different events and struggles for many in 2020. She referenced a popular gospel song, “This Little Light of Mine”, and asked us to let our light shine to improve the lives of others.


click to download audioDuring the program, Councilwoman and program organizing committee member Pat George said they received nearly 80 essays and announced the four essay winners: Caldwell County Middle School student Elijah Thomas, and Caldwell County High School students Katy Trimble, Elizabeth Martin, and Carter Whittington.
Elijah Thomas, a 6th grader, was the essay winner at the middle school and wrote about how MLK, Jr. would speak out peacefully against all of the violence across our nation. Thomas also wrote about what he personally could do to make the world a better place.

click to download audioElizabeth Martin said Dr. King was one of the biggest activists for equality in American history and specifically fought for civil rights.


click to download audioCarter Whittington said in his essay that if Dr. King Jr. was here today he would be very disappointed in our actions. He said Dr. King, Jr. would try to unite our country during the COVID-19, the controversial 2020 election, and the Black Lives Matter movement.
