Princeton City Council Revises Personnel Policy

Princeton City Council approved two bids pertaining to the Public Works Department and a municipal order adopting personnel policies for city employees.
During Monday night’s meeting, Mayor Kota Young explained the personnel policy’s 75% vacations payout was revised to the employee’s current rate of pay as an incentive to come to work amid some staffing issues.

Councilwoman Sheila Gates said her concern is when an employee takes the vacation payout but doesn’t take any time off from work which could lead to some mental health or other issues.

Gates added she would like to see something in place where an employee with three weeks accrued vacation only gets paid for one or two weeks, but not three weeks. Mayor Young noted this change to the personnel policy is something they can watch and revisit in the future.

The municipal order was unanimously approved by a 5-0 vote with Councilman Jim Joiner absent from the meeting.
In other action, Mayor Young also made a recommendation Council send a notice to the Planning Commission that they, as a legislative body, will be reviewing an amendment application for a parcel of land located at 803 Maple Avenue. He added the recommendation is due to some uncertainty with the Planning Commission’s voting process at last week’s meeting.

Council also approved the lone bid of $40,580 from Wildcat Chevrolet for a 4×4 truck for Princeton Public Works, along with a bid from Adams Contracting for $29,419.78 to repair the roof on the Public Works building.

The next regular Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, September 7, at 5:00 due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 6. Anyone who would like to address the Council at that meeting should call City Clerk Julie Key the Monday before the scheduled meeting to be added to the agenda.
