Cedar Hill Cemetery to Host Historic Juneteenth Tour


The Caldwell County Genealogy Society has been restoring gravestones and box tombs in the African American portion of Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The society has put an emphasis on graves of those deceased before 1850.
Carolyn Traum of the Genealogy Society says the cemetery has one of the largest collections of box tombs in Western Kentucky.

click to download audioIn the days of segregation, the African American community of Caldwell County was called Bartlettsville. It was a vibrant community with establishments such as a hotel and dance hall.
The tour will relay stories about those from Bartlettsville.


click to download audioTraum says the walking tours of the Historic African American sections on Saturday and Sunday are booked. However, she says if you are a candidate for mayor of Princeton there will be space for you.
Traum says you can drive through the cemetery and see the 100-plus born enslaved graves that are marked with red, black, and green Unity flags.
