Carneal Parole Denied, Ordered To Serve Out Life Sentence

Nine months and 24 years in prison was deemed not long enough for Paducah’s Michael Carneal.

During Monday’s assemblage of the full Kentucky Parole Board, members voted unanimously for the Heath High School shooter to serve out the remainder of his life sentence.

The decision comes less than a week after a smaller panel heard both victim impact statements and further testimony from Carneal, who at 39 years old will remain incarcerated at the Kentucky State Reformatory in La Grange.
The full board deliberated for more than half an hour in closed session Monday, before addressing Carneal via Zoom.
On December 1, 1997, Carneal opened fire on a high school prayer group in Paducah, killing three and injuring five.
He was convicted on three counts of murder as a violent crime, five counts of criminal attempted murder, and one count of first-degree burglary.
