High winds Wednesday afternoon has forced the Cave-in-Rock Ferry to temporarily close.
District 1 spokesman Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the ferry reports winds have been out of the west-southwest at about 7 to 14 mph with gusts to 20 mph. He notes when the wind is out of the west it affects the current in the river and creates choppy conditions.
Todd indicates the wind is expected to drop to about 6 mph sometime Wednesday evening.
The Cave-in-Rock Ferry will attempt to provide timely notice when service is able to resume.
The Cave-in-Rock Ferry connects KY 91 with Illinois Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County and Hardin County, Illinois.
The ferry normally starts service at 6:00 a.m., 7 days a week. The last run from the Illinois landing is at 9:40 p.m., while the last run from the Kentucky landing is 9:50 p.m.
