Hallowed ground gained even more importance Good Friday morning in western Trigg County, when the families of nine U.S. soldiers took shovels alongside local officials — and turned earth for what will eventually be a memorial honoring those 101st Airborne Division souls lost on the harrowing evening of March 29, 2023, in the two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopter crash.
Formerly owned by Bill and Larry Lawrence, the triangle plot between Highway 272 and U.S. 68/80 has long been the deeded home of Vinson Cemetery.
One of its proprietors, Stephanie Vinson Perry, spoke softly to the Gold Star loved ones clutching yellow roses — less than 200 yards from where her son, Patric, lays in rest.
Perry, of course, is one of many who have called those lands home for so long. Growing up, she said it was more than normal for low-flying helicopters, late-night flares and military caravans to rumble through the region — some close enough to wave to, immediately realizing the sacrifices being made.
One year ago, Perry was there when those sounds weren’t the same from her childhood.
In a closing prayer, Trigg County Magistrate Barry Littlejohn assured both this memorial — as well as a planned future local garden on the Cadiz side of the property — will keep history and memories alive.
Trigg County Judge-Executive Stan Humphries, emcee for Friday’s remembrance, turned to the New Testament of the Bible for words of comfort.
Colonel Clint Cody, 101st Airborne Division Combat Aviation Brigade Commander, said Fort Campbell’s relationship with its regional communities — especially in the last year — only brought solace, comfort and support when it was most needed.
A federal delegation consisting of Senator Mitch McConnell field representative Morgan Alvey, Senator Rand Paul field representative Jason Hassert and Congressman James Comer field representative Austin Wetherington all read penned letters to the families…with McConnell’s words capturing the gravity of the situation.
Reverend Dr. Scott Wilson, of the Cadiz Methodist Church, called the 101st Airborne Division “the tip of the spear” for its bravery, honor and effort, and
Humphries confirmed a committee will soon convene, in order to collaborate and fully layout the build of these memorial grounds.
