Competency Evaluation Ordered for Princeton Man Charged in Death of Girlfriend

A competency evaluation has been ordered for a Princeton man charged in the November 2021 fatal shooting of his girlfriend.

Tommy Dunning is charged with murder in the death of Ursula Hamlet at a home on Coleman Crider Road on November 22, 2021. Kentucky State Police detectives said they found Hamlet in the home with a single gunshot wound to her neck. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by Caldwell County Coroner Dewayne Trafford.

During a pretrial conference in Caldwell Circuit Court on Tuesday, Dunning and his public defender, Steven Ellingsworth appeared before Judge Jamus Redd, where Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Chad Nelson said they were waiting for an evaluation of Dunning and continuing to work on a resolution.

Following the Commonwealth’s request, Judge Redd issued an order for the competency evaluation.

Dunning’s trial date is scheduled for December 16-20. He is scheduled to be back in court for another pretrial conference at 9:00 on Tuesday morning, June 4th.

Dunning remains lodged in the Caldwell County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.
