Governor Beshear Updates Kentuckians on Recent Bills, Upcoming Solar Eclipse

On Thursday, Governor Andy Beshear gave an update on the ongoing recovery efforts in Kentucky following the recent severe weather. He also discussed the actions taken on recent bills and highlighted the upcoming solar eclipse.

The Governor confirmed 11 tornadoes in multiple counties, with most categorized as EF-1. The exception was a second tornado in Boyd County, believed to be an EF-2. At the time of his update, he noted there were 3,575 power outages, down from over 32,700.

Beshear said counties have begun Federal Assistance Assessments for storm damage, and he urged those who have experienced storm damage to take photos before cleanup and report the damages to local county emergency management officials.

The Governor also shared an update on the bills and resolutions he signed since last Friday. He also highlighted Senate Resolution 140 signed Thursday morning before his update. This resolution enables the release of $71 million in capital construction funds, previously approved in the budget, for enhancements at Kentucky State Parks.

click to download audioHe also informed Kentuckians about bills he has vetoed, such as Senate Bill 65, which aims to eliminate emergency coverage for dental and hearing care.

click to download audioBetween January and November 2023, Beshear stated that over 460,000 Kentuckians utilized and gained benefits from these expanded services.

click to download audioThe Governor also urged Kentuckians to plan for a memorable and safe total solar eclipse, which will occur Monday, with totality starting around 2:00 local time in parts of 12 Western Kentucky counties.

click to download audioBeshear also recognized National Public Health Week and thanked the Department for Public Health for their work in promoting a healthier Kentucky. He highlighted the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program, which offers free or discounted medications to qualifying individuals. Last year, he stated the program provided over $68.5 million in prescription drug support. To check eligibility, Kentuckians can call 1-800-633-8100 based on income guidelines set by participating pharmaceutical companies.
