Community Honors Fallen Heroes at Princeton Memorial Day Service (w/PHOTOS)

On a solemn and reflective morning, community members gathered at the Caldwell County Courthouse steps Monday to honor fallen heroes during the Princeton VFW Post 5595 Memorial Day Service.

George Barber, former Chaplain at the local VFW Post, told WPKY’s News Edge that the annual ceremony is held to honor those who gave their lives in service.

click to download audioGuest speaker Dee Robinson, a Navy veteran and current Chaplain of the American Legion in Kuttawa, shared that while she was not a combat veteran, she served during the Vietnam War and cared for many veterans who returned with “horrific injuries.”

click to download audioReflecting on the sacrifices made by comrades in World War I, Robinson explained that the founders of the American Legion recognized four pillars as the reasons why Americans answered the call to serve their country, even to the point of sacrificing their lives.

click to download audioShe added that Memorial Day is dedicated to gratitude and remembrance of our servicemen and servicewomen who have protected our freedom.

click to download audioAfter Robinson’s remarks, the American Flag at the courthouse was lowered to half-staff in honor of Memorial Day, followed by a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.
