Local communities are mourning the loss of James Eddleman Story, a respected and longtime attorney, who died Monday at the age of 97.

Born in Little Cypress in Marshall County as the youngest of fifteen children, Story attended a one-room schoolhouse, and later Sharpe High School before serving as a medic in the U.S. Army, and also became a Golden Glove Boxer.

According to family members, Story attended Murray State on the G.I. Bill, where he met his future wife, Barbara Ann Owens. He earned a law degree from the University of Louisville in 1958 and practiced for 60 years, beginning in Paducah before moving to Lyon County. Elected County Attorney in 1960, he guided churches, schools, and families through the relocation due to the impoundment of Lake Barkley. He simultaneously served as the attorney for the cities of Eddyville and Kuttawa, and the Board of Education.

Story founded the Lyon Co. Water District in 1972, and also established the Lyon County Bar Association with Bill Cunningham and Bill Young. He was recognized by the ABA in 2007 as an Honorary Member for 50 years of Outstanding Professional Achievement. He also served as a Trial Commissioner for 17 years. Story belonged to and supported numerous civic and charitable organizations. Family members said of particular importance to him was the recognition he received from the West Kentucky Volunteer Lawyers Project for contributing free services to those in need.
