Cherry Park Dedicated To Gale And Mike Cherry’s Legacy Of Service (w/PHOTOS)

Friends, family, and local leaders gathered at Planters Bank Pavilion Thursday evening to dedicate Cherry Park in honor of former Mayor Gale Cherry and in memory of her husband, State Representative Mike Cherry, celebrating their enduring legacy.

Master of Ceremonies Janie Tomek welcomed everyone to the special ceremony honoring the couple for their service to the community.

click to download audioShe described how Gale’s vision and determination transformed the space between Main and Market streets into a park that honors both the area’s history and its future.

Mayor Brock Thomas thanked all who contributed to the park’s development over the years, saying it stands as a testament to the Cherrys’ service to the community.

click to download audioThe speakers included the Cherry’s son, Davis, and retired State Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham. Davis recalled memories of his parents and reflected on the temporary nature of places like Capitol Cinema, as Princeton’s businesses close, change, and open anew.

click to download audioDuring his remarks, Cunningham noted that while time fades and people forget your name, landmarks like this park ensure the Cherrys will always be remembered.

click to download audioHe noted that the Cherrys devoted over fifty years to serving others, with Gale as Mayor and Mike as State Representative, forming a dynamic team whose generosity will have a lasting impact on the community, and said their combined achievements “brought light into the darkness”—a legacy honored by the park.

click to download audioThomas said the park’s sign hasn’t yet been completed but will feature bricks from the building across the street, while Tomek shared it will feature an engraved portrait of the Cherrys and a special message.

Gale received a standing ovation as she gave closing remarks, thanking everyone who helped create the park and reflecting on how it all came together, before ending with a heartfelt quote.
