Caldwell County School Board Updates Bus Conduct Policy

The Caldwell County School Board has revised its school bus conduct policy and given the green light for a local sports team to use the all-purpose facility.

At Monday’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Roach explained that the School Bus Conduct Policy revision changes the length of suspension from the bus for a student’s first offense.

In other business, the board discussed a consent agenda item granting the Kentucky Thunder 15 Softball team permission to use the all-purpose facility—formerly the bowling alley—for indoor practices whenever the space is available. Dr. Roach noted that non-school teams will need to meet specific requirements to use the facility.

click to download audioBoard member Kim Cook asked how district coaches felt about non-school teams using the facility. Dr. Roach responded that, while the concept of feeder teams is promising, they will not know how well it works until they try. He added that it remains to be seen whether the facility will be available for outside teams during winter months or periods of bad weather.

Cook also inquired whether the criteria would include an option for the school to withdraw from the agreement if needed.

click to download audioAfter further discussion, the board approved the consent agenda items, including the request from the softball team to use the all-purpose facility and giving Dr. Roach and Board Chair Tim Kennaday the authority to establish rules, regulations, and restrictions for its use.

The board also appointed Dr. Roach as the authorized agent for a FEMA claim to get reimbursed for wind damage to the roof of the Butler Gym last year.

Dr. Roach and the board also celebrated several students and presented the Impact Award to Greg Creekmur of the Caldwell Regional Career Center.

The meeting was held at Caldwell County Elementary School, where board members listened to presentations from the Lighthouse Team—comprised of fourth and fifth graders—as well as from Career Center Principal Tim Bush and Assistant Superintendent Malissa Thomas.
