Local law enforcement is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration campaign to stop impaired drivers over the holidays.

Kentucky State Police say the campaign began on Wednesday and will continue through January 1st, with law enforcement focusing on reducing impaired driving crashes and keeping roadways safe during one of the busiest travel times.

December is reportedly known for a large rise in impaired driving incidents, with drunk driving fatalities reaching their highest levels in nearly 15 years nationally.

Police say impaired driving is preventable, and no holiday gathering should end with tragedy.

Drivers should plan, police say, to have a sober ride; they should pull over and report any vehicle being operated dangerously,  and wear their seat belts.
