James Dunning, 84, of Kuttawa

James Leslie Dunning, age 84, of Kuttawa, passed away December 29, 2025, at Riversbend Retirement Community.

James was born August 28, 194,1 to the late Leslie and Rebekah Groves Dunning. He was a devoted public servant whose life reflected commitment, learning, and service. A retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander, he honorably served his country for 23 years. Following his military retirement, James continued his dedication to service by earning two master’s degrees and working at Fort Campbell as a comptroller. He was also a proud 32nd Degree Mason, exemplifying the values of integrity, brotherhood, and leadership. James will be remembered for his professionalism, lifelong pursuit of knowledge, and unwavering commitment to those he served.

James is survived by three sons, Steve (Theresa) Dunning of Washington State, Donald (Liza) Dunning of California, Robert (Rimi) Dunning of Hawaii; sister, Sue Larson of Lyon County; brothers, Jerry (Beverly) Dunning of Lyon County and Bill (Ann) Dunning of Lyon County; grandchildren, Brandon, Rebekah, Jessica, Bridgette and David Dunning, Joy Coy; several great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Olga Dunning, and his grandson, Steve Dunning.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 9, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors.

There will be no public visitation.

Lakeland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
