Congressman James Comer announced Tuesday that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved $1 million in federal funding to make comprehensive improvements, restore, and modernize Eddyville’s wastewater treatment plant. The funding bill, part of the Commerce, Justice, Science, Energy and Water Development, and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026, now advances to the U.S. Senate for consideration. According to a release, Congressman Comer led efforts in Congress to secure funding for the Eddyville Wastewater Treatment Plant Construction Project, which will restore wastewater treatment operations and help protect public health.

In a written statement, Comer said he’s “proud to have worked alongside local leaders in Eddyville to address the catastrophic failure at the Eddyville Sewer Treatment Plant” last year. He emphasized the importance of modernizing the wastewater system for public health and economic growth, and pledged continued support for rebuilding critical infrastructure across Kentucky’s First Congressional District.

Lyon County Judge-Executive Jamie Smith said she is “extremely grateful to Congressman Comer for his leadership and support in securing $1 million for the City of Eddyville’s Sewer Treatment Plant. She added that following the catastrophic failure of the plant this past year and the significant financial strain associated with its replacement, this funding will make a meaningful difference for the community and Lyon County residents.

On January 6, 2025, the Eddyville Sewer Treatment Plant suffered a major failure, leaving the city unable to treat wastewater and forcing reliance on expensive, short-term emergency measures. According to officials, emergency operations have strained city finances due to rental costs and maintenance. Officials said Phase II of the recovery plan will design and build a permanent, modern facility to restore service, ensure compliance, protect public health, and support future growth in Eddyville and the surrounding area.
