Lyon County officials have announced that plastic recycling will resume at the Lyon County Convenience Center on Wednesday, January 21st.
County officials announced on social media that ever since the closure of the West Kentucky Correctional Complex’s recycling processing center on January 1st, 2024, they have been working nonstop to secure new outlets for recyclables. While an alternative was quickly found for cardboard and paper, officials said locating a facility willing to accept recyclable plastics was much more difficult.
Over the past two years, Lyon County officials said efforts to launch a new recycling operation with various companies and investors were unsuccessful. However, after continued outreach, they are grateful that a Central Kentucky county has agreed to accept their loose plastic recyclables.
Officials emphasized that only plastics labeled #1-PETE and #2-HDPE will be accepted, which includes items such as soft drink bottles, mineral water and fruit juice containers, milk jugs, cooking oil containers, as well as containers for cleaning products, laundry detergent, bleach, shampoo, and body wash. They said no other types of plastics will be permitted.
According to officials, the recycler will run a test load to see if the service is feasible, and warned that any trash or any plastics other than #1-PETE or #2-HDPE could force the program to shut down again.
In addition, they said that the Convenience Center currently accepts cardboard, paper, and plastics labeled #1 and #2 only for recycling.
Officials also urged residents not to leave recyclables on the ground while a trailer is being emptied, reminding everyone that recycling companies will only accept dry cardboard, paper, and plastics. They said any items left on the ground must be thrown away in the dumpster.
The Lyon County Convenience Center is located at 1677 State Route 3305 in Eddyville.
