Slick road conditions on Wednesday morning led to multiple wrecks and caused several area schools to announce delays or closures for the day.
Caldwell County Schools and Dawson Springs Independent Schools cancelled classes on Wednesday because of icy road conditions.
Officials reported Interstate 69 was shut down to northbound traffic around the 85-mile marker on Wednesday morning due to icy road conditions that caused a multiple-vehicle collision.
There were also wrecks reported on KY 139 and on KY 91 South at Highway 672 in Caldwell County and near Rat Rogers Road in Christian County.
In Lyon County, schools were delayed by two-hours Wednesday morning, with Sheriff Brent White reporting multiple collisions on US 62, KY 93, and KY 730. He said KY 730 West near KY 1055 going to the penitentiary was closed Wednesday morning due to ice and stranded motorists on the hill.
Outside Lyon County, Sheriff White said they had received reports of numerous commercial vehicle collisions and other slide-offs on I-69 and the Western Kentucky Parkway, as well as on roads northeast of Princeton going toward Madisonville and Elizabethtown.
Kentucky State Police Post 2 in Madisonville reported responding to around 40 calls early Wednesday, January 21, 2026. Troopers assisted three motorists and handled 30 collisions, including three with injuries. They said most of the incidents happened on the Western Kentucky Parkway between Caldwell and Muhlenberg counties, as well as on other Kentucky highways.
Road conditions should improve by mid-morning as the forecast is calling for a high in the lower 40s on Wednesday.
