Caldwell Special Olympics Blue Team Advances to State, Gold Team Awaits Appeal

The Caldwell County Special Olympics Blue Basketball Team is headed to state after regionals in Bowling Green, while the Gold Team awaits the outcome of a score appeal.

Coach Roy Gene Rogers tells WPKY’s News Edge that local athletes competed alongside hundreds of others at the tournament.

click to download audioAccording to Rogers, the Gold Team played on Sunday, and while the scoreboard showed a two-point loss in the final game, the result is under appeal with the state board.

click to download audioHe says if the appeal determines the Gold Team as runner-up, they will only move on to the state basketball tournament if they receive an at-large bid.

Rogers explains that the Gold Team competed in the B Division, which has more flexibility in gameplay, while the Blue Team plays in the A-1 Division and follows Kentucky high school rules.

click to download audioOverall, Rogers says the regional tournament was a great time, filled with enthusiasm, strong support from parents and guardians, and outstanding sportsmanship from all the athletes. He says they are now preparing for the state Special Olympics tournament, taking place March 13th and 14th in Louisville.
