Princeton native, Dietra Ann Paris of Owensboro, Kentucky’s first Commissioner for Community Based Services and a devoted advocate, will be laid to rest on Friday. She passed away on March 13th at the age of 80.

According to family, Paris was a standout student, graduating valedictorian from Fredonia High School in 1963 before earning her degree in psychology from Centre College. Paris started her career as a social worker with the Kentucky Department of Economic Security in 1967. In 1998, Governor Paul Patton appointed her as the first Commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services, overseeing programs in all 120 counties across the state. She retired in 2003 after 36 years of service in Kentucky state government.

Beyond her career in public service, Paris was an avid world traveler, visiting all seven continents, more than 75 countries, and most US states. She had a passion for photography and often returned home with photos and artwork to display. Many of her journeys were with the Friendship Force, giving her the chance to stay with local families and experience new cultures firsthand.

Funeral services are set for Friday at Morgan’s Funeral Home.
