Peggy Doris Bates Mitchell, age 92, of Princeton, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at her home.
Peggy was born November 30, 1933, to the late Orville and Mary Belle McCormick Bates. She was a devoted member of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as the church pianist, sharing her love of music with all who gathered. Peggy spent many years as a store manager for JCPenney, where she was known for her strong work ethic and leadership. Following her retirement, she embraced life’s simple pleasures, especially fishing alongside her husband and enjoying time on the tennis court. She was affectionately known as the “Queen of Shuffleboard” at the Caldwell County Senior Citizens Center, where she spent countless days playing cards and building lasting friendships.
Peggy is survived by her adored daughter, Melanie Murphy of Louisville, and many cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Elliott Mitchell, and son-in-law, John Murphy of Louisville.
Visitation will be held Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Cedar Bluff Baptist Church from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, April 11, 2026, at Cedar Bluff Baptist Church with Bro. Mark Faughn officiating. Burial will follow in Princeton Memorial Gardens.
