State Police have released details of an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead and a Crittenden County Sheriff’s deputy critically injured.

The Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team was called to a home in the 2800 block of KY 365 near Sturgis to investigate the shooting that occurred around 5 p.m. Thursday in Crittenden County.

According to the preliminary investigation, Crittenden County Sheriff’s deputies and Kentucky Department of Community Based Services staff went to the home to serve emergency guardianship papers.

During the response, investigators say gunfire was exchanged with 60-year-old Ronnie Phillips, who was killed. They say Deputy Rick Coyle was shot by Phillips in the incident and airlifted to Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, where he remains in critical condition.

Police say a female victim was safely removed from the home, and no other injuries were reported.

Multiple nearby law enforcement agencies, including the Caldwell and Lyon County sheriff’s departments, assisted State Police at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
