Community members are encouraged to wear denim this Wednesday as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about sexual violence and support survivors.
The local observance of Wear Denim Day is sponsored by Sanctuary Inc and coincides with Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, recognized each April.
Denim Day is held annually on the last Wednesday of April and has grown into an international movement focused on education, prevention and challenging harmful misconceptions about sexual assault.
The campaign traces its origins to a controversial court ruling in Italy in the 1990s. In that case, a rape conviction was overturned after a judge argued that the victim’s tight jeans implied consent. The decision sparked widespread outrage, prompting women in the Italian Parliament to wear denim in protest the following day.
That act of solidarity eventually inspired what is now known as Denim Day, first organized in the United States in 1999 by the nonprofit Peace Over Violence. Today, the campaign is recognized worldwide as a symbol opposing victim-blaming and supporting survivors.
Organizers say wearing denim is meant to send a clear message: clothing is never an excuse for sexual assault. The day also aims to open conversations about prevention and encourage communities to stand with survivors.
Across the country, individuals, businesses and organizations participate by wearing jeans and sharing educational resources. The observance serves as a visible reminder of the ongoing need to address sexual violence and support those affected by it.
Sanctuary Inc. officials say participation in Hopkinsville can be as simple as choosing denim for the day, but the impact goes further by helping raise awareness and showing solidarity within the community.
