Earlier this spring, the Louisville Zoo offered zoo-goers the chance to donate and assist local animal organizations that were impacted by the December tornadoes that roared across west Kentucky.
On Thursday, zoo officials announced that $2,550 each would be sent to the Kentucky Humane Society shelters in the City of Marion and in Caldwell County. The shelters have plans to use the money for refurbishing kennels, vaccinating animals on intake, and providing food, supplies, and crates to families with needy pets.
Both shelters have reportedly stepped in over the last few months to assist families and pet owners following the tornado’s terrible damage.
The Caldwell County Animal Shelter is a smaller shelter in Princeton, and after the storms distributed more than 5,000 pounds of donated pet food, crates, and other supplies to owners who lost their homes.
Donations to the City of Marion have come at a critical time, as the municipality now faces a dire water shortage in this difficult summer.
