An inmate at the Caldwell County Jail is facing charges after local police responded to a reported altercation Monday morning.
Assistant Princeton Police Chief Shane Allison says officers were sent to the jail around 9:30 a.m. for a reported assault between male inmates, spoke with jail staff, and reviewed surveillance footage of the alleged incident.
He says an investigation revealed that 49-year-old Billy Newberry of Princeton struck another inmate multiple times with his fists and then placed his arms around his neck, choking him.
As a result, Newberry was charged with fourth-degree assault and first-degree strangulation.
The jail’s website indicates Newberry was arrested earlier this month and remains held at Caldwell County Jail without bond for two probation violations.
