Mary Peters Thorpe, age 91, of Hopkinsville, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at her residence due to natural causes. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Huck officiating and burial to follow in Green Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, from 11:00 AM until the service time at 1:00 PM. Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home has been entrusted by the family to handle the arrangements.
Mary was born in Princeton, KY, on November 25, 1933, the daughter of the late Eli Bishop Peters and Lula Belle Johnson Peters. She retired after 30 years in June of 1999, with Christian County Public School Systems as an Elementary School Teacher for Belmont Elementary School and Indian Hills Elementary School. She was very active at her church, First United Methodist Church. She was the UM Women’s President for four years, the President and Secretary for Friendship Sunday School Class, a member of the UMW, taught Sunday School, and always helped with Vacation Bible School.
Her true passion was working with children. She was a 4-H Leader and a member of the Kentucky and Christian County Retired Teachers Association. Mary was selected in 1996 as “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers”. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Thorpe; her sons, Jerald C. Thorpe, Rickey A. Thorpe, Sr.; her daughter, Beckie Gail Thorpe; her five brothers, Lee Peters, Richard Peters, Charles Peters, Lawrence Peters, and Robert Peters; and her grandson, Rickey A. Thorpe, Jr.
Survivors include her daughters, Bonnie Thorpe of Hopkinsville, Belinda (Steve) Edwards of Canton, MI; her brother, Joseph H. (Henrietta) Peters of Princeton, KY; her niece, Kaye (Ray) Mitchell of Princeton, KY; her five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
