The Caldwell County Fiscal Court paused its Tuesday session to honor the late Jailer Willie Harper, who was remembered fondly for his dedication, financial stewardship, and ever-present smile following his courageous battle with cancer.
Jailer Harper passed away at his home on Friday after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this summer. He was in his first term as jailer, having been elected in the December 2022 General Election.
During the judge-executive comments, Kota Young offered his reflections on Harper.

District 3 Magistrate Brent Stallins shared that Harper always had a smile on his face.

He further added that he’s heartbroken for Harper’s boys, and encouraged everyone to continually remind them of what a “great guy their father was.”

click to download audioWith the upcoming elections in 2026, Young explained that Sheriff Don Weedman automatically assumes the responsibilities of the jailer, with no additional pay or increase in his salary, until he makes an appointment.
