Saturday was a special day for Caldwell Special Olympics Basketball Coach Roy Gene Rogers as they hosted the annual winter tournament. Little did he know that as he started the day, he would be the center of attention as the Caldwell County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution would be presenting him with a coveted award approved by the National Society after the group spent several months submitting the application.
Rogers was going about his business running the games around noon at the high school gym when members of the local civic organization, along with members of Rogers’ family, slipped into the gym and mixed in with the spectators watching the game. Before the noon game began, Coordinator Vickie Purcell took the microphone and asked everyone to be seated for a special presentation, and called Rogers to join her. Carolyn Traum from the DAR then announced he had been awarded the honor, and they were there to present it to him. Traum then proceeded to read the various accomplishments Rogers has completed, including his teaching career at the local high school for 33 years, active leadership in the Princeton Optimist Club for over 50 years, and his leadership in the local Special Olympics organization. She also told of his deep devotion to his church, Donaldson Baptist Church, and his God. Rogers was visibly moved by the award, and some say there were some tears shed by Rogers himself and others in the gym. The program ended with a standing ovation for him. As he was exiting the gym floor, he was greeted by several people sharing hugs and words of appreciation, including his family, who he only then realized were present for the entire program.
Traum shared about the award and the process of having it approved.
Traum added that one thing that drew them to choose Rogers was his willingness to help anyone and his humbleness.
When asked to comment on the award, Rogers was still at a loss for words.
Rogers was honored to be recognized for his faith.
Rogers was surprised that his family was there at the program.
Rogers was glad to have former coworkers present.
