Kentucky’s Spring Forest Fire Hazard Season is underway, bringing specific daytime burning restrictions to the Commonwealth.
As of Sunday, it is now illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the hours of 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM. State officials say these restrictions are necessary because dry leaves and vegetation, combined with spring winds, create a high risk for rapidly spreading wildfires during the day.
If you plan to burn, you must wait until after 6:00 PM, when humidity levels typically rise, and winds die down. Even then, fires must be attended to at all times and fully extinguished before being left.
A reminder that while natural brush is permitted to be burned after hours, it remains illegal year-round to burn household trash, plastics, or treated lumber.
These spring restrictions will remain in place through April 30. For more information, you can contact the Kentucky Division of Forestry.
