Motorists traveling through Lyon and Caldwell counties need to be aware of upcoming lane restrictions and traffic changes on Interstate 24 as a road improvement project gets underway next week.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, a contractor will begin lane restrictions on I-24 in Lyon County as early as Wednesday, March 4th, weather permitting, as part of an asphalt rehabilitation project covering approximately 10 miles through Lyon and Caldwell counties.

The project will be between Exit 45, the KY 293 exit, in Lyon County, and Exit 56, the KY 139 exit, in Caldwell County. During the first phase, officials say crews will work in Lyon County only, closer to Exit 45.

For about six weeks, drivers can expect single-lane traffic in each direction on I-24 over a five-mile section between mile points 45.1 and 50, while crews build a crossover. Signs will be posted, so drivers should be prepared to move into the right-hand lanes through the work zone.

In late April, traffic will be shifted onto the eastbound lanes in a head-to-head setup using the newly built crossover, while both westbound lanes are closed for resurfacing. A temporary barrier wall will separate the two directions of travel to keep drivers safe as crews work in the area.

In the fall, the next phase of the project will bring lane restrictions and additional crossover construction to the five-mile stretch between mile points 50 to 55.4, covering parts of both Lyon and Caldwell counties. Work will pause for the winter in December and is set to resume in the spring of 2027.

Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution in the work zone, where the speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph. When signs are flashing to indicate workers are present, officials say fines for violations may be doubled.

Updates will be provided by state transportation officials as the project progresses.

The entire project is expected to be completed by Nov. 15, 2027.
