The Princeton community is mourning the loss of a historic leader. Ophelia Tinsley Scott passed away on Thursday at her home. She was 89 years old.

In 2003, Scott made history as the very first Black female magistrate in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, serving the Second District of Caldwell County. According to her obituary, her appointment followed the passing of her first husband, Charles Tinsley.

Later that year, she was honored with a key to the City of Princeton and named a Kentucky Colonel.

Beyond her historic political service, Scott dedicated more than 50 years to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was also a member of the Church of God in Christ in Henderson. She held several leadership roles, including Presbytery and Secretary at her local church in Princeton for over five decades, two terms as moderator of the Ohio Valley Presbytery, Kentucky State Synod Secretary overseeing five states for four years, and National Missionary Society Treasurer for 15 years.

She is survived by two sons, a sister, and a large legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Scott will be laid to rest on Tuesday. Morgan’s Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
