Spring has sprung at the Caldwell County Jail, where planting began last week in the community garden, a project that provides fresh produce to the community and inmates.
According to Jail Administrator Angela Cotton, they laid down the weed barriers in the garden last week and have begun planting seeds.
click to download audioCotton said that they are still seeking donations of cane poles.
click to download audioShe noted that if you have pre-cut cane poles, they can be delivered either to the Caldwell County Jail next to the garage or directly to the garden.
They are also welcoming donations of live plants.
click to download audioCotton said that they tilled approximately one acre for the garden last week, and her goal is for the produce to be ready to harvest by Memorial Day weekend. She emphasized that all the produce will be available to the community free of charge.
click to download audioThis marks the second year of the community garden, which was initiated last year thanks to a generous land donation from Highland Baptist Church to the Caldwell County Jail.
The community garden is located diagonally across from Highland Baptist Church at 318 Baker Street.
